"Lay Up"

Back in the Summer of ‘89, I sailed the Great Lakes as deckhand aboard the “Calcite ll.” We finished the season in January, at Frasier Shipyard in Superior, WI. It was a bitter-cold but beautiful place; ships all about, with the high bluffs and bright lights of Duluth just across the river – counting down just ten more days of engine room work before heading across the UP to home. I sketched this boat astern of us, while bundled up and sheltered by the aft cabin. Not sure if it’s the “Taylor” or the “Sloan”…but she’s pumped out high & dry, bow thrusters exposed, still wearing remnants of the massive ice “beard” from our shared last trip across Lake Superior. I call this one “Lay Up.”
